Here it is…. my favorite Mother's Day gift.
There used to be a caterpillar crawling up the side of the heart, and some days the refrigerator is so covered in artwork, you can't even find this magnet.
But every time one of my boys hands it to me and says something like, "You're the best mom I ever had," I realize it's not really the magnet I love, it's what it symbolizes. It's almost like a handmade card that never got put in that file of papers I'm going to scrapbook someday…
It just sticks around – reminding me that I have had the ultimate privilege of being the center of someone's world. It's also a reminder that I have a lot to live up to.
But… just in case the card aisle is fresh-out of cheesy magnets, we have a few other ideas to turn Mom's head this Mother's Day.
An experience gift is something she'll enjoy and remember, and will never end up in the landfill. Some great options might be:
Movie night with Dad
Spa day with the girls… or alone
A yoga retreat
Gift of Service
Another great option that doesn't create more "stuff," is a gift of service. It can be a service for Mom, or a service given in her name. Gift her coupons for a day off from cooking, cleaning and laundry.
We love the Seva Foundation's collection of Mother's Day Gifts of Service. For just $50, you can give the gift of sight (vision correction surgery) to women in poor countries around the world.
You can also choose to donate to her favorite non-profit organization or charity.
Green Gifts for Mom
Just like we always say here, if you're giving "stuff" keep it as sustainable as possible. If you're mom is eco-friendly, she'll love a second-hand gift you find on eBay or at your local consignment or antique shop.
Fair Trade is another excellent way to go, as many Fair Trade organizations help women support their families by learning a skill or trade. The Fair Trade certification generally means items were made sustainably or with little impact on their native land.
Because moms are good at multi-tasking, she'll most likely appreciate a gift that does double duty itself. High quality essential oils can replace most of your medicine cabinet and your cleaning supplies. Our favorite collection is the Young Living Everyday Oils and the Stress Away Roll On oil.
If there's a new Mom or Mom-to-Be on your list, grab a copy of Paige Wolf's new book, Spit That Out: The Overly Informed Parent's Guide to Raising Children in the Age of Environmental Guilt. Help her realize what's worth the effort and when to "let it go" when it comes to being a Green Mom.
And as always, if you opt for a physical gift for Mother's Day, be sure to wrap it green.
Do you have a favorite Mother's Day gift like my magnet? We'd love to hear about it in the comments!
