During my corporate days, it was easy to tell the “state of business” by the holiday gifts that started pouring in from vendors and clients each December. When I started fresh out of college in the late 90′s, the gifts ranged from the biggest Harry & David towers and leather portfolios to logo apparel crystal picture frames. And it wasn’t just the sales team, even support admin staff would walk out of the building balancing gifts.
Fast forward 5 years – and many shakeups in the apparel industry – later, and the only gift I received was a calendar from a promotional products vendor that had two July 28th’s on it. That was the same year the corporate holiday bonus barely covered the cost of a Christmas dinner turkey.
Was it less festive? Maybe a little. Although the calendar was good for a laugh, I did miss gathering around a cubicle with pears and Moose Munch. But I didn’t miss the “stuff” at all. How many glass paperweights in the shape of a t-shirt do you need anyway?
My favorite corporate holiday memories don’t have to do with things. They were the time our boss took us all out to lunch. Or the gathering together to collect gifts for the Salvation Army Angel Tree. Or listening to (and sometimes trying not to laugh at) the extremely enthusiastic carolers that traveled through the buildings singing and shaking sleigh bells.
Further proof that experiences make memories… not things.
That being said, I realize there are times when you are expected or feel obligated to buy a gift. We’ve found some consumable gift items as part of our Conscious Christmas With Abe’s Market series. These gifts are meant to be eaten or used, and are made with sustainable ingredients and packaging that can be recycled.
