When was the last time you gave yourself a life-changing gift?
We talk a lot about Fair Trade gifts, and how they make a difference in the lives of women around the globe. You understand the connection you feel when you hold a piece of jewelry that was made by the hands of a woman in a tiny village. And you know that because you bought the item, she can feed her children today.
So, what about a gift that makes a remarkable difference in your own life? You deserve it just as much as the Fair Trade worker, don’t you?
I believe the answer is yes.
And if you’ve ever had that fire in your belly, or even that little whisper in the back of your mind saying you should start your own business or blog… my goal with this little note is to tell you — GO for it! Try it out. Give it your all for six months and see where it takes you.
You might end up with something astounding on your hands. Or you might realize it really wasn’t what you wanted. Either way, you’ll never have to live with regret. Whew! How about freeing that space up in your mind, right?
This blog is my passion, hobby, and what I’ve wanted to do for almost a decade.
You see, it took me a l-o-n-g time to start. And even then, I stopped and started, finding all sorts of distractions along the way. But I know it’s where my heart is, and I have this deep feeling that it’s where my purpose is — to help people give gifts that are not only meaningful, but kind to the home we all share – this planet, that we haven’t taken very good care of.
How Did I Get Here?
Spending 10 years in the corporate world, I’ve been both a happy working mom and a miserable working mom. For the most part, I enjoyed my job – but the long hours and travel no longer worked out for me by the time my second son was born. It wasn’t easy saying goodbye to that big salary and dress clothes, but it has absolutely been the best decision I ever made.
I took two years entirely off from having a job. Notice I didn’t say “off from work.”
About 3 months into Stay-At-Home Mommyhood, someone joked that I was taking early retirement. My response was something smart-mouth about how retirement is supposed to be relaxing!
It was exhausting, but so rewarding. And I know I’ll always cherish those picnics at the park and seeing the world through the eyes of my boys, who delight in every sidewalk crack, bouncy ball, or lightning bug.
A Natural Progression
When the time came for my youngest to start preschool, the next natural step for me was to start working again. With my corporate sales and marketing experience, I started freelancing in marketing and copywriting for small green businesses. It didn’t take long before I started to realize that hey, I could do this for myself too! My gifts align with supporting and helping others. It’s one of the same reasons I love being a mom so much – nurturing and supporting my family. It just comes naturally to me.
Since working for myself, I’ve learned more than I could have dreamed about productivity, efficiency, and taking action. I’m now such a “get it done” person, those drag-you-down, excuse-laden people just don’t come around much anymore. Never found that in the corporate world!
Following my heart and my passion has been one of the best gifts I’ve ever given myself. I just felt like sharing that with you and hoping you’ll take the leap and do the same.
If you ever need support along the way, I’m here to cheer you on!
