Essential Green Gifts
One of our favorite gifts is the gift of good health. And when you can give someone a gift that not only improves their health, but makes life easier — that’s one powerful present!
Since my family started using Young Living Essential Oils in early 2010, we’ve replaced just about everything in our medicine cabinet (which was already filled with mostly alternative medicine to begin with). I can’t claim to have “cured” anything with plant oils, but let’s just say we’ve lessened the woes of everything from ear infections to an asthma attack to spider and bug bites.
We’ve changed the way we disinfect our home, and we no longer burn candles to make the house smell better. We diffuse certain oils for a pure, fresh scent or to help kill mold and allergens.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are nature’s very essence — distilled from flowers, trees, roots, and seeds of plants.
With therapeutic grade oils, it may take an entire plant or more to produce a single drop of distilled essential oil. Thousands of petals are used to create a single bottle of rose oil. These oils are also highly concentrated… just one drop of peppermint oil has about the same concentration as 20 bags of tea.
Essential oils have been used for healing and religious ceremonies since ancient times. When I talk about how Frankincense works wonders for my peace of mind or stopped my son’s cough just from a whiff of the bottle, people ask, “Frankincense? You mean like what the Wise Men brought Baby Jesus?”
I always laugh and say, “Yeah, there wasn’t a Walgreens on every corner with a shelf full of cold and cough medicines.” And can you imagine how slowly word of a product recall would have spread back in those days?
Other oils, such as myrrh, lotus, and sandalwood were widely used in ancient Egyptian purification rituals. Clove and lemon were highly valued as antiseptics hundreds of years before the discovery of modern antiseptics. In ancient times, oils were respected for both medicinal and their healing properties.
Most prescription drugs are tested and rolled out in a matter of a year or so. Compare that to the centuries-old healing properties of peppermint, and I know which one I feel safer turning to for an upset stomach.
And because it has dozens of other uses, peppermint essential oil is a staple in our kitchen, medicine cabinet, and my purse.
Here are a few of our favorite Young Living Essential Oils that make the perfect green gift.
